How to identify plumbing problems before they get worse

Knowing what to look and listen for can save you thousands. Most serious plumbing failures give warning signs days or weeks before they become emergencies. Here's how to recognize the most common ones so you can act early - and what each symptom usually means.

gas water heater

Water heater making rumbling or popping sounds

This is almost always sediment buildup on the bottom of the tank. Minerals from hard water settle and harden over time, forcing the heater to work through a layer of scale. Left unaddressed, it shortens the heater's life significantly and increases energy bills. A flush may solve it - or if the tank is over 10 years old, replacement may be more cost-effective.

Low water pressure throughout the house

If pressure has dropped in multiple fixtures at once, the cause is usually a partially closed main shutoff valve, a failing pressure regulator, or buildup inside older galvanized pipes. If it's only one fixture, it's more likely a clogged aerator or cartridge - a quick DIY fix. Sudden pressure drops across the whole house can also indicate a main line leak and should be checked promptly.

sink drain water with brown color

Brown, rust-colored, or discolored water

Rusty water typically means corroding pipes or a deteriorating water heater tank interior. If it appears only when the hot tap runs, the heater is the likely culprit. If it comes from both hot and cold taps, the issue is in your supply pipes. Either way, discolored water is a sign the problem is already advanced and worth having inspected soon.

garden pipe replacement after a leak

Unexplained spike in your water bill

A sudden increase with no change in usage almost always means a hidden leak somewhere in the system. Common culprits are a running toilet (which can waste 200 gallons a day silently), a dripping outdoor hose bib, or a slow leak behind a wall. Add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank - if the color appears in the bowl without flushing, the flapper is leaking.

Slow drains in multiple fixtures

One slow drain usually means a local clog in that fixture's trap or drain line. But if multiple drains are slow throughout the house - sinks, showers, and toilets draining sluggishly at the same time - that points to a blockage deeper in the main sewer line. Tree root intrusion is a common cause in older Sacramento-area neighborhoods. This needs professional equipment to diagnose and clear.
